Epilogue

POLICE CHIEF Henry Russell was in a world of confusion and he didn’t like it one damn bit. He’d been up all night, one way or the other, sorting out his suspects and making a hash of his incendiary relationship with Jana.

Gabriel Vargas was clearly guilty. But of what, exactly, was as murky as a swamp. The Wolf sisters claimed to have seen a figure in black running from the back door of the museum, just after the lights went out. They’d been outside with their constant companion, Scooter, rescuing the dog from their car to give him a chance to “water” the shrubbery.

A second suspect fit the scenario. While Gabe was maneuvering into position to grab the tiara his conspirator was cutting the power. Henry figured that the distraction was meant to give Gabe time to swipe the tiara and then slip away in the confusion, but the young Rom refused to talk.

Henry was baffled by inconsistencies. There was no way Gabe could have smashed or otherwise broken into the state-of-the-art case that housed the tiara. Certainly not in total darkness, in a matter of minutes. No, seconds. Was it possible that the young man had been duped into taking part in an impossible theft?

For what purpose?

Officer Sam Blake knocked once on the open door.

“Chief, you’re going to want to take a look at this.”

“What is it?”

“A report on Trey Stone.”

Henry waved Blake away. “I already saw that.”

“Not this one. I requested more information after Tremayne told us Stone had lived in California. I dunno if it means anything, but…”

Henry rose, strode around his desk and grabbed the fax. “What now?” he growled, feeling uncharacteristically jumpy. No sleep and too much sex and caffeine could do that to a guy.

He skimmed the report. “Well, I’ll be damned.”

“Trey Stone” was an assumed name.
